Story
By the age of 6, I was collecting a raft of medical diagnoses (and misdiagnoses).
At one point I was taking 10+ 𝒇𝒇armaceutical drugs at any one time - and apparently that was ok. My school attendance never rose above 37%. Childhood was dominated by illness, outpatient hospital trips and just trying to get through each day.
Music was my emotional escape - I 𝒇𝒇ound MadMusicalMe
Keys started at age 5. Guitar and drums came later, the latter completely unexpectedly. Mad Musical Me became “my home” (‘cause I’ve always been a little bit nuts).
At age 12, my best 𝒇𝒇riend, Hope, lost her life. I’ve now realised, as part of my clinical work, that she was actually taken unjustifiably by modern medicine.
Some of our most obvious symptoms overlapped, we were so lucky to have each other to make things less lonely. Often, when everyone else was outdoors running around but we weren’t so well, we’d be inside playing Star Wars together. She was quite literally the perfect Princess Leia, hair and all.
She was taken by the very people we’d been taught to entrust.
Some years later, my soul music beacon, Jimmy Sullivan, was also taken by modern medicine - the very person to have set my musical mind alight when music teachers didn’t know what to do with my mad and weird ways. This was after a legal 𝒇𝒇armaceutical drug interaction (of which I was on 10+, back in those days). Nothing illegal took his life.
While I didn’t know it at the time, Mad Musical Me just got up and walked pretty much at that point… 𝒇𝒇or 15 years.
And then I was to become a rather boring, stressed and unwell Chartered Engineer; a specialist of root causes in complex systems.
Realising that modern medicine had absolutely no concept (or care) on the difference betweens symptoms and causes, I parted ways and spent my life savings retraining.
After a hefty health restoration journey, it’s now completely by accident (we can blame or thank my brother, you decide!) that Mad Musical Me is back from the woods.
The rest - well I keep that inside my Health Hacks and Music Craic Newsletter.
After 15 years completely away from her MadMusicalMe - while continuing to navigate lifelong health struggles - Blondie Burgess returned explosively in 2025 with a child-like obsession to her old mad musical self. But this time round, it comes with lived experience inside music. After health issues were finally fully resolved (her words: “THANK YOU, 𝒇𝒇unky Med”) after parting ways with modern medicine, she has grieved the unintentional loss of the artist she was always meant to be.
While determined to retain the health she’s now claimed, she knows the very best music to have been made is through strong emotions. And it’s that reason she cannot stick to one genre - the lyrics drive the vibe! She’s grateful to have found her emotional centre and core, while not simultaneously being wounded by it.
A classically-trained pianist, guitarist, metal drummer and vocalist (ahem, metal screamer) she now blends genre influences into something emotionally unfiltered, groove-driven and (hopefully!) not easy to sit still to.
Drawing inspiration from the avant-garde genius of J. Sullivan, and as a metal drummer and screamer herself - she best describes her music today as Bluesy/Jazzy Avant-Pop/Rock (this means there’s no metal - in the original versions, anyway!).
Compositions begin on piano - a tribute to her and soul music beacon and teacher whose last creation was exactly this. These are then transformed into layered, genre-bending productions driven from lived experience. Her writing is driven from real truth in our collectively spiralling physical & mental health; our Mad Modern Health in our Mad Modern Life.
Having performed in bands, orchestras and studio environments until age 19 where her hiatus sadly began, she now records independently (all instruments recorded by her alone) while building her 𝒇𝒇irst collection of original material. Her sound combines uplifting, butt-wiggling grooves with darker emotional undertones, in attempt to balance catharsis and celebration. It’s meant to bring Hope.
The result is music that feels soulful, danceable, yet raw and human in a world where we have lost what that means. Songs to make butts wiggle but also refusing to hide the truth underneath.
